The Town of Nantucket’s Council on Aging acts on behalf of elderly residents on Nantucket, 60 years and over. The councils focus is to provide programs, activities, information and volunteer opportunities that enhance the quality of life for our senior citizens. The Saltmarsh Senior Center is home to the Council on Aging and is the social and recreational hub on Nantucket for active seniors. Our programs encompass nutritional, educational, recreational and social needs to Nantucket seniors. We provide information and lectures regarding health care, nutrition, legal services and changes to federal and state laws which pertain to the elderly.
Council on Aging Board’s Mission:
1. Identify the total needs of the elderly population.
2. Inform the community and enlist the support and participation of all citizens concerning these needs.
3. Design, promote, or implement services for the elderly in the community.
4. Promote and support other programs which are designed to assist the elderly in the community.
The Saltmarsh Senior Center, located at 81 Washington Street Extension, is owned by the Nantucket Center for Elder Affairs. The Saltmarsh offers between 6 and 9 activities and recreational programs daily. Aerobics, Tai Chi, Yoga, SHINE counselors, SMILE counselors, Hearing Aid services, Blood Pressure, Congregate lunch host, Men’s Breakfast, Saltmarsh Dinners, Crafting, Knitting, Art Classes, Cribbage, Card Games, Bingo, Nintendo Wii, Scrabble, Mah Jongg, Social and Duplicate Bridge, Lending Library, Sing-a-Longs, Cooking, Seminars, Computers and Annual Elder Expo.
